Relating yoga to other beliefs systems, sport and fitness programmes

Yoga teaches us about our essential nature, the inner pulse that keeps us beating in harmony with each other and with nature. The science of yoga is designed to help us to reach our fullest potential. Yoga is not a religion, but a belief system and lifestyle consideration that can enhance any religious or spiritual structure, and sport and fitness programme that will allow it’s members the freedom of individuality.

Yoga as a health practice

Health is the most important aspect of our lives – more important than anything else. In our modern world there appears to be more interest in fixing disease that there is in preventing it from happening in the first place. A healthy person is a happy one, and although this can be a complex issue it is clear that no happiness can be the result of discontentment and pain. Health is a priceless treasure, yet it cannot be maintained by money alone. Healthy people make for a better world, think of a positive, radiating and caring, compassionate person. Look closely, critically and see why this person is well, and why this person contributes to the wellness of others. Health is inherent in all beings, yet is has to be nurtured.

Yoga in sport and other programme

Yoga will improve all levels of physical activity. Decrease in injuries, advanced muscular control and improved co-ordination skills leads to better performance levels. These, and numerous other results are derived from more efficient breathing and stretching, and the ability to focus more clearly on the needs of the body. Improved mental clarity leads to more efficient application of the will, an important aspect in competitive training programmes. Because yoga itself is non competitive it may also help those who wish to foster a less aggressive attitude regarding their chosen sport, and to enjoy the sport more for its feel-good benefit rather than ‘the win or nothing at all’ prevalent in sports.
